Bundles of Joy

Some friends of ours just had their first baby, a girl. She was due on Christmas day, but she arrived early. Maybe she wanted to make sure she didn’t miss out on seeing Santa.

The news reminded us of when our own kids were born, and we started reminiscing. I thought about some of the things we’ve learned. Would it have been helpful to know some of those things ahead of time? Here, for instance, are some things I’ve discovered:

*You use words like wa-wa and boo-boo long after the kids have outgrown them.

*You go from buying one tiny bottle of ketchup every year to buying one giant drum of ketchup every month.

*Your car starts to smell like old French fries. Much worse when it rains.

*Shopping with children never gets easier.

*If you love walking around barefoot, be prepared to step in wet things and have no idea where they came from.

*If your child hasn’t played with something in over a year, you should give it to charity.

*Two days after you give it to charity, your child suddenly remembers it, and goes into hysterics trying to find it.

*You find yourself spelling out words in conversation – even when there are no kids in the room.

*No matter how many times you fold them, the towels rearrange themselves.

*A new roll of toilet paper occasionally makes it into the bathroom on time, but it never makes it onto the hanger.

*At some point your mother/father’s face stares back at you from the mirror.

*At the oddest moments, you realize how grateful you are.

This list is so true….

The last one on that the list is the truest of all.
My first two kids are 15 years apart (same marriage)
And a day doesn’t go by that I don’t thank God for my blessing and
miracle.

Hilarious! The donation of toys couldn't be truer! And the shopping with children!
Thanks for the laughs!

Amen to all of these!
I'd add "You find out that not only do ants like kitchens--they like cars too!"

Louise - I'm impressed with anyone who can handle a teenager and a toddler at the same time!

PJ - They must have a sixth sense about those disappearing toys...

Becky - Oh, no, not the car! I'm suprised I don't have them there, too...I know for a fact they love cheesy Dorito crumbs :)

amen to all of that--except I hope the charity thing isn't true because I just took a van-load over today!!!

Love these! My bathroom hand towels always end on the floor! And shopping, Ahhhhhh! We go through that big ole ketchup bottle as well. Congrats to your friend! I miss when my little ones were babies sometimes!

A great list, especially true about the toys, once you get rid of them. I've ended up buying the same toy over once or twice.

Oh, this is so funny! LOL @ the ketchup. My husband insists on keeping a "spare" bottle in the cabinet.

hahaha...I don't have any children of my own yet, but it sure sounds familiar with my niece and nephew. :P

Green Girl - Good timing...you can remind them Santa's on his way :)

Brenda - Of course, they get back at us with the texting thing. TISNF!

Kelly - I hate to tell ya, but the pile of towels keeps getting bigger... ;)

GutsyWriter - Amazing what we'll do for a few moments of peace.

Rena - Oh, yeah - the industrial size twin pack!

Alex - And aunts get to have fun and never make them clean their rooms...enjoy it :)

My daughter's 20 and she's still mad I gave away her blankey - oops!

They might forgive you - but they never forget . . .

No kids of my own, but I houseparented long enough to know it's all true. One thing I remember disappearing was...salt. My goodness, they ATE salt!

This list is dead on. I thought I was the only one doing the ketchup thing. I also now buy peanut butter jars the size of my head monthly

Kim - Hmm...now I'm wondering where my own blankey went... :-0

Bish - That's so funny - my daughter was just confessing to sneaking licks of salt!

Christy - We say this all the time around our house - "It's funny 'cause it's true!"

Suzie - Thanks for the reminder - I'm getting low on peanut butter ;)

And every word of it true!

Yes -- you've reproduced my list too. In our house, we still call hair baubles 'pretty-pretties' (I blush just writing it) and often refer to sharing with the redundant 'share together' (which our eldest invariably used). I think we parents do this partly because we want to hang on to that sweet innocence of our toddlers just a little longer. Plus, it embarrasses the hell out of the kids.

Another thing I've learned is how to get bubble gum out of hair and how much it hurts when you step on a piece of Leggo.

Icqb - Sounds like you speak from experience...:)

Mary - LOL, is there a parent who hasn't stepped on a Lego...or could resist embarrassing the kids at least a tiny bit?

While you teach them how to talk, you never succeed in teaching them how to listen.
